“Microsoft Corporation is often painted as ‘the bad guy’, yet really they have been highly effective in making the personal computer the success it has become today. Discuss this statement.Microsoft/PC is very different from Mac computers.

They were originally designed for different tasks and they will always be different. Microsoft was originally designed for the sole purpose of work based things such as excel and word. They also meant to run externally built software things like games and business software. Macs on the other hand are made to run programs made by apple. This is the sole reason why Macs get fewer problems. They don’t get viruses either because no one will make something to steal information or wreck the software for a minority group. This is because it is illogical to do.Another difference is the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI). The GUI on PC is very customisable so you can make it look and feel how you like. Macs have a limit to what you can and can’t do on it.

What is software?
Computer software, or just software, is a collection of computer programs and related data that provide the instructions telling a computer what to do and how to do it. We can also say software refers to one or more computer programs and data held in the storage of the computer for some purposes. In other words software is a set of programs, procedures, algorithms and its documentation.

window xp is the most common operating system in the world. It was made by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, and media centers.
mac osx is a series of Unix-based operating systems and graphical user interfaces developed, marketed, and sold by Apple.
linux is used on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers and video game consoles, to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is a leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world.
ubuntu designed primarily for desktop use, although netbook and server editions exist as well.
Describe 5 main functions of the operating system.

What is Application Software?

Application software(app) is what runs off operating systems. Eg word powerpoint google chromer

 

What is COTS?

Cots(Comercial Off The Shelf) is a term defining technology which is ready-made and available for sale, lease, or license to the general public.

 

Together with your friends you decide to build some software that will let you share music files between your home computers (and your iPods etc.).

a)      Who will be the users of your system?

My friends would be the users of  the system that would be put in place

b)      What are the main pieces of data/information that the system is likely to store?

The main piece of data would be music files. Eg mp3

c)      What social and ethical issues can you think of concerning (a) the use of the system you’ve developing and (b) the storage of data?

I am quite sure this type of system is illegal. The database would need to be password protected so no one you didn’t want could get into the database. It would help your friends that aren’t as rich as you listen to the same music.

d)     What are likely to be your concerns as a software developer in regard to the ownership of the work that you have completed?

I personally wouldn’t be too worried if someone was going to take this software off me as long as the cops can’t trace it back.

‘Changes’ by Anthony Browne Analysis

‘Changes’ by Anthony Browne is a picture book on a kid worrying about what changes are going to happen. He is worrying about them because his dad said “Things are going to change around here”. Throughout the book he is picturing what he thinks is changing rather than what is actually changing.

The child in the book, Joseph Kaye, is able to view the world in a different perspective than everybody else.  When Joseph is told that things are going to change he pictures physical changes, when in reality they are mental changes and changes on daily routine. Joseph ends up going around his house trying to find out what is changing around him. He first notices the kettle as it turns into a cat. But everything else looked normal. He goes to investigate elsewhere. The next thing he notices is his shoe turns into a bird. The sink then gets then starts to get human characteristics. Slightly scared he then goes to sit on the couch.  The couch then turns into an alligator. The lounge chair then turns into a gorilla as well. When he goes outside everything at first glance it is normal.  When he goes to kick his soccer ball it turns into an egg. The hose turns into a snake. As he looks into his house through the window he sees that the gorilla is now the size of King Kong. Scared, He runs to his room, closes the door behind him and turns off the light. After a while his parents walk into his room and his mother has in her hand a baby! His mother says to say hello to his baby sister.

As the story goes on the animals that the inanimate objects turn into get scarier and scarier, this represents his imagination getting more and more carried away as he gets more and more scared at what is going to change. As each object gets more dangerous he gets more panicky and he even goes outside to try to escape and eventually goes and hides in his bedroom with his light turned off to escape all the ‘change’ that is going on around him. In the end when his parents come into the room and light from outside spills in, it is like understanding coming into the room and sweeping the mystery and fear of the unknown change away. He realises that the change that his dad was talking about was the birth of a baby sister, even though this will drastically change his life it is better than any of the changes that he imagined happening around his house.

Change affects everyone’s lives, even if it’s not the way that the kid (Joseph) sees it. Change can have either a massive effect on someone’s life or a little effect, depending on what the change is. For example if the change is moving school then it will be a massive change to your life, the place where you spend the majority of your days will have changed and also all of your friends that you go around with will have changed as well. When you change schools you can try to stay in contact with your friends from your old school but it is very hard and you will have made new friends as well. To a small change like changing the brand of toothpaste you use, this would have almost no effect on your life at all except that you are now using a different brand of toothpaste.

The book tries to show how different people react to change and how dissimilar ages see and respond to change. Before analysing the book I thought that people of all ages all saw changes the same and kids (similar to the kids age) in the books age would at least be able to see the world a bit the same as older people. Kids that are young often use their imagination a lot more than older people do, also it affects their worlds a lot more than older people.

Change affects people in many different ways it all depends on your situation and your view on it.

Creative Writing

As I look out at my front yard I see a small lush area with plants taken from all over the world but none are able to surpass my height. I remember playing in it climbing the once giant gum. Now it is long gone removed from the world as if it was a single ant with broken legs left to fend for himself.

I was young when I was up this tree my Dad gardening underneath. He loves gardening he is pottering around doing as he pleased. I thought he didn’t know I was up the tree so I was being quite trying not to be noticed with my hood pulled up all over my face. I didn’t dare breathe when he came near, just so he didn’t hear me.

He finally came close enough so that I could fly like a ninja and get on to his back.  I am soaring through the sky nothing beneath my feat for what felt like miles. It felt like an eagle going in for his kill just about to get what he set out for. But in that moment of bliss thinking I had finally won. My Dad spins around catches me and tackles me to the ground.

How I long for those days where I could do whatever I wanted and didn’t have to care about anything in this world except for my own small world inside. Where I didn’t have to do GIANT amounts of English homework and spend half my school days being bored out of my brain but then still having to stay because it supposedly benefits my future life.

 

That tree that was there got removed about three years ago. That was where I would think and just relax. Now it is gone that place doesn’t exist anymore. . At the end of the day I will find a new place like that where I can go and just enjoy how this world is. Wish that change doesn’t keep on chasing me and it will leave me alone just once I a while so I can get used to what is going on around me.

Short answer

 

1. The writer gives the washing line life by using techniques such as personification. Some examples of these techniques would include words like skeletal arms. She also uses items like metaphors. An example of that is when she talks about the washing line being a tree.
2. The view of the world changes as the child goes through her life. At first she is climbing the washing line like it is a tree. She also looks around her to get her bearings and tries to find out what is happening around. As she gets older she has the same want to climb but the experiences through her life have taught that she is unable because it will break and she also fears the judgment  of others  thoughts about her.
3. The change that has occurred that has altered her view on what she can and can’t do is called time. In that time she comes to the present day and remembers all the good times she has had throughout her life times
4. There has been actually not much change through her life there is only a hint, she still has the same want to climb the clothes line and to be able to do what she did as a child. The only thing that is changing throughout the short story is the time period. There are only two reasons she doesn’t one dignity and the other her size.
5. There may be many things that are keeping her tied to the ground, she might be embarrassed if someone else found her up the clothes line or she might have other more important stuff to do. It could just be the simple fact of her not being able to get up there without breaking it or her.
6. Some of the changes in the persona’s world may include things such as responsibilities or she might have lost her ability to climb.

Extended response

i.        Two thesis statements that you could make about the concept of change are “Change happens as you get older” and “As you get older you think about consequences”. We learn from this text that as people get older they start to experience change throughout their lives whether you want it or not.

ii.        Comparing the two stories ‘Changes’ by Anthony Brown and ‘The School Caretaker’ they both symbolize change but in a dissimilar ways.

 

The School Caretaker is about how your thoughts of something changes over a period of time. As he sees someone who is considered scary when he is younger and when he is older he sees the caretaker again and he realises that he is not so scary any more. He realises that as he has aged the way that he perceives things is unlike when he was young. The book ‘Changes’, shows change as a child wonders what is about to change around his house and how he is imagining what is going to physically change but not mentally around the house. Both of the books are about how change can affect the way that you look at life and your perception of reality. In the physical sense in ‘The School Caretaker’ and the mental in ‘Changes’ the texts both manage to show how people perceive change and how it effects peoples lives .

 

The text Sky High adds a different twist on things. It shows change in the physical but the mental as well. It tells the story from a first person view which also makes the story more unique. If the girl when she was 18 went swinging around on the clothes line, first of all the clothes line would probably break, she might be embarrassed if someone saw her swinging on the washing line or she might be too busy to do these kinds of things. ‘Sky high’ shows that as you get older the things that “tie you down” in the world get greater and greater. This is once again different from the other two previous books, this proves that change is able t o affect everybody and it can do it in many different ways.
